Q&A of the Week April 10, 2024

Question

I won't be able to file my 2023 tax return by April 15. How do I file an extension?

Answer

Tax extensions must be filed by the due date of your income tax return, which for most taxpayers is April 15, 2024. If you receive an extension, your 2023 tax return is due October 15, 2024.

You can use IRS Free File to file your extension for free. Please note: you will have to estimate your tax liability, and if you owe money, your estimated payment is still due on April 15, 2024.

Another option is to get an extension when you make a payment. Log into your IRS account, use Direct Pay, and select "extension." You will receive a confirmation number and you will not have to complete a separate form for your extension.
